“‘Mais vous êtes brave’:* Reflection on the Irish soldiers in French service, 1690-1815”

Lecture in English by Prof. Thomas Bartlett, historian, Ireland Fund Monaco academic-in-residence.

This lecture aims to provide an overview of the history of those Irish soldiers who enlisted in French service during the eighteenth century. Prof Bartlett will discuss numbers, motivation, service and how they were perceived in both France and Ireland. In addition, he will attempt to shed light on the life and career of the Irish soldier in French service during these years.

Prof Bartlett will be introduced by Pierre Joannon, Consul General of Ireland in South-Eastern France.
